About Diamond Clarity

Diamond clarity is a pivotal aspect of the overall quality and value of a diamond. Clarity refers to the presence of internal and external imperfections, known as inclusions and blemishes, within a diamond. These natural features can affect a diamond's brilliance. The importance of diamond clarity lies in the fact that it directly impacts the diamond's visual appeal. Beyond aesthetics, clarity is also vital as it can influence a diamond's durability and longevity. A diamond with fewer flaws is less prone to breakage and can withstand the test of time. Therefore, when investing in diamond jewelry, considering clarity is essential.

What is Diamond Clarity?

As a fundamental characteristic of a diamond, clarity describes the presence or absence of internal and external imperfections, known as inclusions and blemishes, within a diamond. These imperfections are essentially tiny birthmarks or flaws that formed during the diamond's natural growth deep within the Earth. Clarity is assessed on a scale, with the most common being the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grading system, ranging from "Flawless" (no visible inclusions or blemishes under 10x magnification) to "Included" (inclusions and blemishes visible to the naked eye). A higher clarity grade typically indicates a more valuable and visually appealing diamond, while lower clarity grades may have noticeable flaws.

Diamond Clarity Scale

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) employs a comprehensive clarity grading system. At the pinnacle of clarity are "Flawless" (FL) diamonds, which exhibit no visible inclusions or blemishes, and "Internally Flawless" (IF) diamonds, which may have minor surface imperfections. "Very, Very Slightly Included" (VVS1 and VVS2) diamonds feature minute inclusions that are exceptionally hard to discern even under 10x magnification. "Very Slightly Included" (VS1 and VS2) diamonds, the next category, have small inclusions that are noticeable but still relatively minor. Moving further down the scale, "Slightly Included" (SI1 and SI2) diamonds possess observable inclusions under magnification, generally not visible to the naked eye. Lastly, "Included" (I1, I2, and I3) diamonds exhibit visible inclusions and blemishes.
